Descripción
Sumario:The present paper is a revision of the genus Ayenia (Sterculiaceae, tribe Byttnerieae, subtribe Byttnerinae).- Since Kinné described the type, A. pusilla, 60 more species have been added mostly in an uncorrelated way, the respective descriptions being generally short, with little detail of the floral morphology mentioned and only rarely illustrated.- The genus was divided into three monotypic sections by Grisebach: Euayenia (Ayenia), Leiayenia and Cybiostigma. Other contributions worth mentioning are found in several regional floras.- The present study is based on the revision of specimens kept in American and European herbaria; in most cases it has been possible to examine types, isotypes or at least phototypes. The larger part of the Argentinian species were cultivated.- The vegetative and floral morphology is described and figured in comparative drawings.- The pollen morphology shows that in Ayenia there exist two types of pollen grains; the exima is reticulated in Leiayenia and Ayenia, and spinuliferous in Cybiostigma.- The flowers are normally chasmogamous and allogamous, the pollinization probably being carried out by insects. A. angustifloia (Central Brazil) has separate male and female flowers, due to the abortion of the respective organs. Cleistogamous flowers are described for A. violacea, A. virgata and A. velutina (Antilles).-
