| Sumario: | The region analyzed in this work lies within the "Hydrogeological Basin of Burruyacu", in the northeast area of the Province of Tucumán and, to the east, extends beyond the boundary with the Province of Santiago del Estero. In this region there is a significant agricultural activity with intensive use of the groundwater. The drinking water supply for the rural and urban populations comes from deep wells since there are no rivers or streams in the foothills or on the plains.- Detailed hydrogeological studies that take into account the preservation of the water resources are required for the rational and sustained exploitation of the groundwater.- This study reports a detailed geological survey of the lithological units in the Sierra de La Ramada, focusing on the importance as groundwater reservoir rocks. A geological-geomorphological map was drawn from air photographs and satellite images, pointing out the various geoforms that control the distributions of the aquifers in the region.- The climatic information supply by numerous meteorological stations, facilitated to characterize the region climatically and determinate from the recharge of water to the two aquifer complexes.- Geophysical studies based on Vertical Electric Sounding (VES) determined three aquifer complexes, one of them free and the other two deep. These two are intensely exploited for drinking and irrigation water. Isoresistivity maps were made as well as maps of the top, bottom and thickness of the aquifer complexes to know their distribution and behavior and so facilitate their future exploitation.- On the basis of a well statistical survey a map was drawn of the curves of water level, showing the recharge, discharge and conduction areas as well as the direction of the flow. The survey reported the number of wells in operation, their location, depth drilled and lithologies crossed, building characteristics (drilling and casing diameters), waters levels (static and dynamic), rate pumping, number and deep of the exploited aquifers and uses of the groundwater.- Pumping assays in selected wells allowed the characterization of the two deep aquifer complexes.- Samples from stream water, from the free aquifer and form the two deep complexes were taken. Temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, O.C.D., O.B.D., alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride, nitrate, fluorine, silica, arsenic, vanadium, uranium, boron, antimony, iron and molybdenum were determined. The samples were analyzed in the laboratory of the Instituto de Geoquímica (INGEOQUI) under the Investigation Center San Miguel.- All the sampling operations in the selected points and the techniques and procedures used in the laboratories have been normalized in agreement with the rules of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1993a - b), of the U.S. Geological Survey (Skougstad et al., 1970) and other international organizations of world-wide prestige.- In the free aquifer complex, extremely high values of fluorine and arsenic were found in the drinking water, so that its consumption is unadvisable.- The analysis of the geophysical, hydrogeological and Hydrochemical data allowed us to determine the existence of two deep aquifer complexes with good quality water in the basin under consideration |
