Sumario:ABSTRACT. The family Characidae is the most diverse among Neotropical fishes. Systematics of Characidae is principallly based on pre-cladistic papers, and its monophyly has not been adequately corroborated. Most of its subfamilies, as traditionally treated, werw reconsidered in recent papers, and many genera became incertae sedis within Characidae. Principal objetives of this paper are to propose a phylogenetic diagnosis of the family and monophyletic subfamilies in Characidae, in addition to generate morphological information of studied species and test the monophyly of some of the most diverse genera within the family. With that aim, 360 morphological characters werw studied for 160 species of Characidae and related families. A Parsimony phylogenetic analysis was done under implied weighting and self-weighted optimization, exploring a broad range of K values in both character-weighting schemes. The analysis under self-weighted optimization is innovative in matrices of the size of the one analyzed here, and some searching strategies under this method are applicable to other medium or big-sized matrices. The presented phylogenetic hypotheisi is the strict consensus of the trees obtained in the range of parameters whose results werw more stable among the xplored ones. Results are rather coincident with phylogenies previously published. The level of family of Serrasalmidae is corroborated, and Acestrorhynchinae and Cynodontinae are included within Characidae. The family Characidae is diagnosed on seven synapomorphies: 1) slender orbitosphenoid distand from parasphenoid; 2) rhinosphenoid present; 3) more than 40 vertebrae; 4) more than 24 branched anal-fin rays; 5) most anterior procurrent caudal-fin rays fused in vertical plate; 6) radii of scale confluent in focus; 7) tendon from A¹ section of adductor mandibulae partially attached to the quadrate. The new subfamilies Astyanacinae, Bramocharacinae, Bryconopsinae, Hemigramminae, Heterocharacinae, Jupiabinae and Nematobryconinae are proposed. New definitions or taxonomic levels for the suibfamilies Aphyocharacinae, Aphyoditeinae, Bryconinae, Characinae, Gymnocharacinae, Hemibryconinae, Rhoadsiinae and Stethaprioninae are proposed. The former subfamilies "Glandulocaudinae" and "Steverdiinae" are included in Hemibryconinae. Engraulisoma taeniatun is removed from Characidae and included in the family Gasteropelecidae. Most of incertae sedis genera are located, at least tentatively, in a phylogenetically diagnosed subfamily.
