Sumario:Abstract: The genus Pohlia includes 127 species worldwide distributed, with 36 present in the Neotropics, These species are distributed predominantly along the Andean corridor. Mots of the species included in this study were know only from Type material and virtually no research has been done on their phylogenetic relationships. The objetives of this study are: to corroborate the monophyly of the Neotropical species of genus, through the study of gametophytic and sporophitic generation structures; tl proposes hypotheses on the phylogenetic relartionshios among these species, establishing their taxanomic limits, and determinating their distribution range. Almots 3000 samples from herbarium loans from 32 herbariums from 14 countries, and my own field colletions were studied. A matrix of 60 morphological characters and 80 species of Pohlia and related genera was created. A phylogenetic analysis of parsimony under equal and implied weightings was perfomed. The morphological and ecological variability of the genus in the Neotropics is described and illustrated using microphotographs and distribution maps. Thirthy new synonyms, 17 new Lectootypes and one new combination are proposed. P. camptotrachela and P. ludwigii are excluded from the Neotropical flora. According to my results, Pohlia is not monophyletic. However, it can be easily recovered as such if Leptobryum wilsonii and Pseudopohlia dydimontia are included within Pohlia. The results also support earlier proposals (Shaw 1982, 1984) to include Mniobryum and Webera as Pohlia synonyms, and are in agreement with the sections proposed by Hill et al. (2006) and the addition of the section Polisetae.
