| Sumario: | ABSTRACT The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), is considered one of the most important pest affecting comfields in almost all tropical America, being considered the key-pest for northernn Argentina maize crops. The omnivorus Doru lineare is one of the most abundant insect inhabiting maize agro-ecosystems in the region. The aims of this contribution were: to evaluate the efficiency of this earwig as predator; to known the alimentary preferences, and to measure the capability and functional response against different densities of S. frugiperda newly emerged larvae. When the earwig where evaluated exclusively as a phytoophagous ensect, they shwed a marked preference for pollen consumption. Both males and females consumed significantly more corn pollen than milky corn grains, meanwhile leaff utilization were not verified. In another experiment D. lineare was evaluated as FAW predador, where adults consumed equally eggs and newly emerged larvae. Finally, when the earwigs were confronted with corn pollen and FAW eggs, adults consumed significantly more eggs, and this behavior did not shw differences between sexes. The nymphal stage lasted 26.9 days, and the newly emerged nymphs had to eat a mean of 424.67 eggs to reach the adult stage; this consumption rate was not significantly different for male and female specimens. Lastly, the predatory effeciency of D. lineare on FAW newly emerged larvae was evaluated throughout a functional response study. D. linear showed a type II functional response, and disc equation estimations of searching efficiency and handling time were (a)=0.374, and (t)= 182.9s, respectively. Earwig satiation occurs at 39.4 FAW larvae. Based on these results, the potential impact of D. lineare on FAW populations was discussed. |
