First, a morphometric analysis of Lules River basin was done as a firdt spatial descrption of the catchmet. In addition, a hierarchical model was adapted including two alternative scale for comparations of diversity. Differents community attributes of macroinvertebrates were compared spatially (between sectors and reach) and temporally (between sampling dates and seasons). On the other hand, the composition of the riparian vegetation of the sampled sites (lateral dimension) were described. This analysis allowed to obtain an indirect measure of the ecological status of streams. Moreover, the influence of two types of disturbances on the structure of benthic community was anallysed: floods and land-use. Finally, the longitudinal distribution of the benthos and the influence of hydrological variables was analysed. As result, Lules River basin had seven sub-basins and a hierarchy of seven. The richness of Lules River basin was of 126 species, and this value was comparable with that founded in other basins with similar climate. Insecta order included more than 70 per cent of total abundance of organisms, with Diptera. Ephemeroptera and Coleoptera as dominant orders. Orthocladiinae, Oligochaeta, Chironominae, Baetodes huaico and Austrelmis spp. (larvae) were the dominant taxa, and this result corresponded with the findings of other studies carried out in tropical and subtropical climate, except for Oligochaeta, which had a higher contribution in relative abundance than excepted. The values of richness and diversity of macroinvertebrates were similar between sites, and this factor suggested that the basinn function as a metacommunity, where the local communities are linked by the dispersion of multiple interactiing species. The riparian vegetation of Lules River basin was componed by native and exotic species. The presence and expansion of species in some the studies sites had been facilitated by the lack of control of human activities tht affected some properties of the ecosystem. Similarly, some charateristics of the sites allowed to distinguish two groups: sites affected by antrhopogenic impacts and sites without them. Periods of high and low waters were charaterized by diffferent taxa of macroinvertebrates. High values of abundance were detected in low-water period, while evenness increased in high water season. An immediate recovery of abundance was detected after the peak of flood, and this fact is associated with high resilence of theecosystem. Anthropogenic impacts produced and increase in abundance, and a decrease in richness, diverdity and evenness of invertebrates. The consequences of human impacts were reflected in the physicochemical characteristics of streams and benthic assemblages. Two groups of sites were distinguished along the longitudinal pattern: sites upstream and downstream sites. Certain complex hydraulic variables characterized the upstream sites. In conclusion, Lules River basin has high richness of macroinvertebrates, factor related with the heterogeneity of conditions provided by the Yungas Phytogeographical region. This study highlights the strong interconnection between different streams, characteristics that describes the operation of the reach as an integral part of the same spatial unit. This work aims to contribute to the knowledge of the structure of benthic fauna and the main variables associated with its distribution, in order to future works cosider this information for conservation purposes
